SP Music Represents Hazell Dean as Record Label.
Hazell Dean is universally recognised as the Queen of the British Clubs and one of the most iconic voices in dance music history. With a career spanning over five decades, Hazell has achieved enduring success across disco, Hi-NRG, eurobeat and dance-pop, earning her titles such as Queen of Hi-NRG, Empress of Eurobeat and Duchess of the Dancefloor.
Early Career
Although Hazell’s first chart hit arrived in 1984, her professional singing career began in the 1970s. She recorded several singles for Decca Records that became hugely popular on the Northern Soul scene.
Hazell honed her craft through extensive touring and live performances, appearing at prestigious venues including the London Palladium and the Royal Albert Hall, while working alongside many of the era’s biggest entertainers.
Initially rooted in pop and soul, Hazell’s confidence in the studio and on stage led her naturally towards dance music—setting the foundations for her future success.
Breakthrough & UK Chart Success
Hazell made her chart debut in February 1984 with the double A-side:
“Evergreen” / “Jealous Love” – UK Top 75
Just two months later she scored her breakthrough hit:
“Searchin’ (I Gotta Find a Man)” – UK #6, 15 weeks in the Top 75
Hazell was among the first artists to work with Stock/Aitken/Waterman, and her recording of:
“Whatever I Do (Wherever I Go)” – UK #4
became their first ever UK Top 10 hit.
Major UK Singles (1980s)
Hazell became a consistent chart presence throughout the decade with the following hits:
Whatever I Do (Wherever I Go) – #4
Who’s Leaving Who – #4
Maybe (We Should Call It a Day) – #15
Turn It Into Love – #21
Back in My Arms (Once Again) – #41
No Fool (For Love) – #41
Love Pains – #48
They Say It’s Gonna Rain – #58
International & US Dance Success
Hazell Dean achieved major worldwide success across Europe, South Africa, Australia, the Far East, and particularly the United States:
“Searchin’” – US Dance Chart #1 for 5 consecutive weeks
“Love Pains” – Best Hi-NRG Remix (1989)
“Better Off Without You” – Best Commercial 12″ Single (1991)
“They Say It’s Gonna Rain” became a Miami dance anthem and remains a firm favourite in South Africa, uniquely featuring a Zulu rain chant.
Albums & Catalogue
Hazell recorded her own material for the albums:
Heart First (Proto Records)
Always (EMI Records)
Her catalogue has since been celebrated with successful reissues and collections, including definitive releases from Cherry Pop and a previously unreleased 1970s Bacharach & David album.
Hazell released the albums In The Name Of…, Nightlife and Re:visited through Energise Records.
These releases marked a successful collaboration between Hazell, Pete Ware, Energise Records and Dutch remixer Matt Pop, giving a fresh, contemporary energy to some of Hazell’s personal favourite tracks. The albums were warmly received by fans and further reinforced her enduring appeal within the global dance music community.
